Smart city mission was launched by honorable Prime minister on 25th June 2015. The vision was to make the Indian cities smart. In the initial phase the smart city proposals were made. These proposals were vetted by ministry of urban development (MOUD), Government of India (Gol), ranking was assigned by MOUD based on the intervention and the proposal incorporated in the Smart City Proposal.

The result for the 1st lot of cities was declared by MOUD in last week of January 16th in which Jaipur stood on 3rd place. As the result was declared the government of Rajasthan initiated the process of formation of separate company to implement the project approved by Gol. In this direction the special purpose vehicle (SPV) named Jaipur smart city limit was formed on 12th March 2016. This SPV was made the nodal agency to take up works proposed under the smart city proposal. In the approach to the smart cities Mission, the objective is to promote cities that provide care infrastructure and give a decent quality of life its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of smart solution.

The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a light house to other aspiring cities. the smart cities Mission of the government is a bold, new initiative. It is meant to set examples that can be replicated both within and outside the smart city, catalyzing the creation of similar smart cities in various regions and parts of the country.
