Smart city mission was launched by Honorable Prime Minister on 25th June 2015. The vision was to make the Indian cities smart. In the initial phase the smart cities proposals were made. These proposals were vetted by Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) based on the interventions and proposal incorporated in the smart cities proposal. The result for first lot of cities was declared by MoUD in the last week of January 2016, in which Jaipur stood 3rd.

Immediately after the results were declared Government of Rajasthan initiated the process of formation of separate company to implement the projects approved by Government of India (GoI). In this direction, Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), namely Jaipur Smart City Ltd. (JSCL) was formed on 12th March 2016. This SPV was made the nodal agency to take up project works proposed under the smart city proposal.

In the approach to the smart cities mission, the objective was to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and offer a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of smart solutions. The focus was on sustainable and inclusive development.

The idea was to look at compact areas, create replicable models which act like a light house to other aspiring cities. The smart cities mission of GoI is a bold new initiative. It is meant to set examples that can be replicated both within and outside the smart city, catalyzing the creation of similar smart cities in various regions and parts of the country.

Taking the prelude from the smart cities mission launched by Honorable Prime Minister, Jaipur Smart City Ltd. (JSCL) followed the same lines to make its mission statement which included care for its citizens, clean and sustainable environment, infrastructure which is more user-friendly, and enhance the quality of life of its citizens by application of smart solutions.

Jaipur being a heritage city, the idea was also to restore its heritage, so that it can be cherished by residents of Jaipur as well as can be seen and explored by travelers who specially visit Jaipur for its architectural beauty and rich culture.
